If Powell doctrine had been followed and 500,000 troops went in and succesffully pacified the country and we supported these troops with taxes at home and with funds from other nations a la gulf war, it would be a different story. The plan failed, was not adjusted to reality and now we stew in the juices we produced

I would say rather the plan failed, WAS adjusted for reality, the enemy adjusted also, the Coalition adjusted again, and so on. This is a thinking enemy who has been get a lot of help from safe havens across the borders, a problem that could not have been prevented by 500,000 US troops - at least not by that alone.

Newspaper reporters became wedded to the idea that Bush doesn't change so they are don't report change at all or triumphantly announce a "180 degree change of positions." One or the other.

This is another corollary of newspapers refusing to cover the war as a war, just as a body count. Readers never perceive tactics changing because they are rarely reported and never put in context.
