Berlin is one of the worst of those cases.

Berlin is the capital. Capitals of rich nations always get a lot of goodies. Look at DC.......there are tons of taj mahals.

However, I do agree with you that the West Germans spent too much guilt money on East Germany.....like indulgent parents who were too busy to parent their children. I think it would have been better to run the two entities as two economies and let the GDR develop into a free economy in the same way Poland and the Czech Republic have done so......over time.

In addition, I think the West Germans were too quick to poo poo East German industry as inferior. It might have worked better had they allowed the industry that had some potential to evolve over time instead of shuttering most of it indiscriminately.

Bottom line: I think the reaction of the West Germans may have given the East Germans a bit of an inferiority complex.
