In addition, I think the West Germans were too quick to poo poo East German industry as inferior. It might have worked better had they allowed the industry that had some potential to evolve over time instead of shuttering most of it indiscriminately. The West German industry never wanted to get competition, they wanted a new market for their products. It never was in the plans to keep even parts of the East Germany industry intact. The shut down and sell off took place almost immediately and with the stupid 1:1 exchange between West and East German Mark their industry was doomed anyway. Taro
