Zambian mine workers down tools for higher salary: Mopani Copper Mines

Workers at one of Zambia's major copper mines in Mufulira, Copperbelt province have downed tools in a bid to press the management to improve their salaries and offer better service conditions, state-owned Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) reported on Wednesday.

The miners at Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) are demanding an increase in salaries of up to 30 percent against the earlier 16 percent hike offer by the company's management.

Operations at MCM have came to a complete halt as miners were told to go back home by the Mine Workers Union Of Zambia representatives. The operations at the company's smelter, refinery and concentrator have also been affected, according to ZANIS report.

Irate miners at the mine also blocked the entrance to the company and stoned buses that were dropping off miners reporting for the afternoon shift.

It is a common practice for miners in the southern African country to demand salary hike on annual basis, and in most cases they will go on strike under the organization of miners union when their demands are not fulfilled.
