Every single smearvet claim was a total deliberate lie. You cannot name one thing those sleazy bastards put out that was true. Sure, Kerry was against the war after fighting in it, as most Americans were by then, and with good reason, but his purpose was not to lose the war, that was already lost long ago, the purpose was to save our troops from being killed for a cause that was long ago debunked and discredited. Therefore, Kerry was on the side of the troops, just the opposite of what the smearvets said. And they knew it.

Now we look back at Vietnam and see no rason for the war whatsoever, and of course it was escalated to begin with based on a total lie. Ever since we left Vietnam, that country hasn't been any threat to us whatsoever. In fact the first thing the Vietnamese did after we left was go to war with the Chinese and kick out the Soviets. So Kerry was proven right on his anti-war views as well.
