It's going to take awhile before Dell can take control of it's own destiny again. They jettisoned almost all of their R&D and so when things are not running smoothly they can only keep placing phone calls to Intel and Microsoft or look for contract workers. I doubt they are going to try and be the company they were again. The technology has changed and they would be starting from near the beginning even if they hired a new staff of engineers.

It seems to me that Dell has to embrace the path they are on, but do it more effectively. They are essentially a web-based supplier of electronics to business and consumers. They now compete more with Office Depot and Best Buy than they do with Hewlett Packard. Their goal is to be more well known and dependable than the other internet based suppliers.
