Gateway that got crushed after pursuing a retail strategy.

I think Gateway's retail strategy was a response to them getting crushed, not the cause. Dell was receiving payments from Intel that may have been $1 billion just to reject AMD. In addition Dell got it's boards about 3 months before Gateway. They were essentially the same computers, but Gateway was always behind on the launch because of that delay.
