so if a person with the same genetic structure practices christianity (or islam or whatever) today, is that person considered a Jewish person ?


Generally it's felt that active practice of another religion is disqualifying - that the person has separated themselves from the Jewish people by that action. But there is debate about it. I know there was a lot of debate in Israel about taking in the Falashas of Ethiopia, whom the Israelis accepted as Jewish, because quite a few of them had become Christians.
