Sirri, director of the Division of Market Regulation, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, said exchanges and electronic communication networks will begin complying with the Trading Phase of Regulation NMS on Monday. "A market's rollout of new trading systems inevitably presents challenges for the market and its participants," the SEC said. "In addition, the exceptional trading volume and price volatility of the equity markets over the last few days raise the potential of even greater challenges during the trading phase." The next deadline is July 9, when Reg NMS will apply to 250 pilot stocks. The SEC is moving ahead with Reg NMS despite a request from the New York Stock Exchange .
