The scholars who interpret Islam for society and culture decided to back regimes that could protect pockets of Islam after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. We are dealing with the results of that now. Dictatorships, Fascist rulers, Kingdoms, and regions run by war lords. America is a good example, with approximately ten million Muslims who are benefiting from opportunities not available in home lands and who are infecting the people back home with their ideas, while bringing innovations with them to America. Outsiders no longer exist in the classic oppositional sense of the term. Things are changing for the better as cultures are blending and accommodating one another, but not fast enough to avoid conflicts.
