I wasn't really trying to imply that the Canadian economy is without problems. I understand the cost and competition problems in eastern Canada.

I was really talking about the RELATIONSHIP between the Canadian currency and the US currency and the economic conditions that underpin each currency.

While the Canadian national debt has been declining for a decade, the US national debt has spiraled towards 9 trillion USD.

The cost just to finance the US debt annually is larger than the entire Canadian debt. This is not a relative positive for Canada and its currency?

The Canadian current accounts surplus may fluctuate, but any surplus is an improvement over a $600B annual trade deficit. This has to be a net positive for Canada.

OECD is a organization of 30 developed nations.

Of those 30, how many have budget surpluses, trade surpluses, energy independence and growing energy production?

Just one......Canada.

I personally think the last two items (energy independence and growing energy production) will be crucially important to any nation that has them as we approach the beginning of the end of the age of hydrocarbons.

So other than the Canadian national preference for melancholy, why so much pessimism up there?

Is it the long winter nights?<g>
