Mary, the key (at least for me) is to go for the harder investments, the ones that require a lot of time. The hot money, like farm land at the moment are not necessary hard to get into or difficult to invest. They are the momentum play at this time and as such, have plenty of avenue and liquidity like gambling.
While the time frame for institutional investments have declined over the years and according to the WSJ, have went under a year, I feel the real money is made over a much longer period of time. Over 5-15 years, momentum plays won't make us money consistently unless you are so timely as to catch every hot play that sprout from nowhere. I strive to make something above the Indexes and if and when I get into an IPO like SBUX, LFC, PTR, GOOG, BIDU and RIVD, I count my lucky stars and hold them for the next 5-15 years.
