Rousseau, had no idea what he was about. He said people are innately good. He is epitomized by the concept of the "Noble Savage." Man is nature is good, and becomes evil when civilized. He is the ideological leader of the "back to nature" concept. You and I put up with it in NZ and Hawaii with all the fawning over our local Polynesians. The "blood and soil" [Blut und Boden] movement in Germany under Hitler was based in part on him, IMO. I have never met a Socialist/Environmentalist who didn't like Rousseau.
