There are parallel narratives to the story, one deals with the tycoon, another one deals with the trials and tribulations of a laid off employee of a company the tycoon owns, and how their fates ultimately intertwine. There are one or two more narratives there as well. Like with all Wolfe novels, it's less about story line and more about his observations and insights on the human condition.

I like those early travels and explorations. I have the one mentioned at the bottom of this page, Report Upon the Colorado River Of The West by Lieutenant Joseph C. Ives. It's full of maps, plates and engravings. Haven't read it much, I just like flipping through it. :)
