Wharfie, it's axiomatic that governments do the wrong thing just when they don't need to, to solve a problem which is self-solving or intractable and "solving" the intractable problems will exacerbate them and introduce other problems. So, to Peak Oil and governments "saving" us from our CO2 pollution of the commons. Mq's theory is that Peak People combined with technological paradigm shift will cause Peak Oil. It will not be because of oil depletion or government stupidity, though governments will do their best to do stupid things such as the vast and absurd carbon credits game which is now becoming a huge bureaucracy [which is the purpose of government spivs so they think carbon credits are an excellent idea]. Peak People has now happened in many places. Islamic Jihadists are still breeding like rabbits and dying like flies, but they largely live a separate life from normal humanity, seething in Cairo and Pakistan in subsistence lives of introspective Koranic confusion. Most countries are now below sufficient birth rate to maintain populations. And the process is accelerating as having babies is abandoned as a cultural norm. Mqurice
