Strike at Zambia's mine hits copper production

Production at Zambia's Luanshya Copper Mines remained at a standstill Monday after miners vowed to continue strike action over pay, raising fears of heavy production losses, according to union official.

Miners refused to heed the advice of union leaders and management to return to work after downing tools Friday, Oswell Munyenyembe, general secretary of Zambia's Mine Workers Union, said.

The mine produces up to 2,000 metric tons of copper a month.

Talks over the weekend came to nothing after the two parties failed to reach a common position over pay.

Albert Mando, general secretary for Zambia's National Miners and Allied Workers Union, said up to 1,000 miners stopped work at the copper mines after management refused to award a 40% pay rise. The company had offered an 18% increase.

The company said the strike is illegal because there is no labor dispute between workers and management.

Luanshya Copper Mines is owned by Switzerland-based J&W Investment Group Ltd.

Last week, workers at Mopani Copper Mines also went on strike over a wage dispute but they later returned to work while talks continued.

Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda told parliament Friday that the government was aware of the escalating number of strikes in the Copper Belt and that it was putting in place measures to enable parties to resolve disputes quickly to avoid production losses.
