"...Mahdi Army militants have displayed little resistance to the security campaign. Sunday was no exception: U.S. forces swept through the eastern corner of Sadr City with barely a sign of opposition, Garver said.

Some Sadr City residents said the area has been calm, although the militia continues to work in the shadows. "The Mahdi Army is still operating," said Ammar Abbas, a cigarette vendor near the area where the sweep took place Sunday. "We're still afraid of them."

The militia's leader, the anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, has not been seen in public since January. The U.S. military said last month that he was in Iran, although al-Sadr's spokesmen denied he left the country...."
