There are as many lax muslims as there are Christmas/Easter Christians or High Holiday Jews. It is like when Cromwell ruled England, and everybody was miserable, but no one complained. Partly because he killed complainers.

If you took away Jihad, what exactly does islam have to offer. Poverty, squalor and low status..... But with the self pity and romance that comes from fighting an oppressive world, you make the situation liveable and give the peasants hope that things will be better. People die for hope.
