You can easily strip Islam from the ME in a virtual manner and see what the cultures would be like. What were they like before Islam vs now? Take that ancient culture and give it today's economy and technology, then duck. The humanity of the world, with its vices corruptions and extremisms hasn't improved one whit from the earliest written records. Technology has evolved but human beings haven't found a smarter way to force the other guy to change than flinging a chunk of lead at him. Blaming Islam is a way to avoid responsibility and for excusing your own human animus.
