I think there is a significant number of people in Western cultures whose faith is grounded in what you might consider mysticism. Many people have experiences that result in a profound feeling of connection to a power that is separate from their sense of self. Oftentimes, such an experience is the beginning of their religious life and they THEN seek out a church home or a spiritual group with which to align themselves.

For various reasons, most people are uncomfortable discussing these experiences with others. When they do, however, common threads emerge that lend validity to the reality of the experience. Also common threads emerge that cut across all of the world's religions.

For example, I've known people whose transcendental experiences filled them with such a reverence for life that they would carry a spider outside rather than crush it on the kitchen floor. I think I've read of similar attitudes arising from Eastern religions??
