Rie Munoz, a famous Alaska artist, got her start with realistic painting. She realized she wasn't having any fun and started doing a style that can only be described as her own. Her new style caught on, and now she is famous and rich. This example is not what I wanted to show, but it's the only example I could locate.

Barbara Lavalee does similar work.
