Before the advent of the SUV, I think BMWers and Prius would have been considered mid size cars.

I don't think the official size designations have changed (although I could be wrong). Cars have gotten larger in recent years, but somewhere around the 70s and/or early 80s they got smaller. A car at the upper part of the compact range doesn't seem like all that small of car any more.

Also while I said the Prius is about the size of a Civic, Civics are a bit bigger than they used to be. They aren't the smallest Hondas anymore. You have the Honda Fit which is smaller and cheaper (also the S2000 which is smaller but not cheaper)
