BamaReb--My GGG Grand Daddy was in the 28th Illinois.
First Northern unit to actually counterattack during the battle of Shiloh. I cannot say there are any family legends related to such an incident as you discribe. I like to think my ancestor who survived that vicious war did so by virtue of having some intelligence. With a battle raging I hope he had the sense to shoot someone that was shooting at him rather than someone obviously otherwise occupied.
I have to confess to a Southern connection also. GGG Grandfather and three sons all enlisted in the 14th Tennessee. All killed (I believe in battle).

I would never have mentioned the football game anywhere but on the Flame thread. I told Lee before he posted to you about the game but he was too much of a gentleman to mention it. A restriction that doesn't apply to me.
