and the wealthy, they have got to be good for the poor. Who
do you think creates jobs or defrays the welfare bills or
finances the new companies and technologies that give the
bottom cohort of "poor" in the United States a standard of
living--measured by consumption spending and amenities such
as color TVs, cars, housing space, and medical care--above
the living standard of middle class Japanese, or middle class
Americans as recently as the 1960s.
