For the record, I have no doubt that Motorola/Samsung is going to help fund infrastructure trials or that Intel will help with advertising. However, the original post in this thread alleged that these companies might be funding Sprint's WiMAX deployment leaving Sprint with little risk. We are probably talking about >$5 billion in investments and there is very little chance that any subtantial portion of that total is going to be made up by outside companies. Startup Beceem Communications Inc. , which claims to be the first to deliver a Wave 2 mobile chipset, says it should allow customers to deliver devices based on the silicon in the second half of 2007. WiMAX Forum certification of initial Wave 2 base station and device interoperability is slated to start in the second quarter of 2007. These forum test schedules have also been known to slip before. (See WiMax Waits on Testing.) FWIW, some commentary from SSB yesterday was along the same lines as this article. WiMAX Wave 2 chipsets and certification are taking longer than expected to get to market. Absolutely shocking....Not. Slacker
