Jozef - Re: " with their designs produced on shoe-string budget. Everything else after coming up with the design was an uphill battle for Cyrix."

Not exactly - Cyrix sold about $126,500,000 worth of bonds in 1996 - so they had a budget of over $126 million buckaroos to spend on their 6x86MX, which isn't exactly stting the world on fire.

$126,500,000 may be a shoestring budget to you, but it's a pretty hefty budget when you don't have wafer fab development expenses nor a fab to maintain and run.

A good question is - Was the 6x86MX worth $126,500,000?
