George, sometimes its not a question of what is good, but how it is perceived. It is more of a question of equity in the minds of the working class and poor, and less of a question of economics. I think we are beginning to see a grumbling of unions and workers against the upper classes. How would you feel if you did not have health care, were working as a part time worker at 2 or more jobs? In the mean time, you read in the paper Mike Eisner or someone else is taking a large capital gain from options excercised in the millions of dollars, while you cannot afford to take your kids to Disney? It is more perception of inequity, than reality. The Japanese system is different in many ways, they have very little welfare or other Lyndon Johnson type Great Society Nets. They rely more on extended family structure to help out an unemployed or underemployed member,in many ways this is more ideal than our system.
If you look at lower middle class wages and benefits over the last 20 years,it will show a decline in living standards. I am a free market advocate, and am against any state run industry, but perceived or real inequity must be addressed.
