I agree with you that Maher has said some outrageous things, but (imo) that wasn't one of the them:

"Don't get me wrong: I've never joined the Dick Cheney Fan Club. But what I said Friday -- and what I believe -- is that the Vice President has presided over a bungled execution of a war in which thousands of our bravest continue to die. And I believe that were he not in power, our troops would likely come home sooner. But I don't wish him dead.

Ironically, I made my comments during a discussion about Free Speech, which is one of the chief reasons that I love my country"

I don't see any wish there, and anything outrageous about it. If Mr Bush and Mr Cheney were not in power, were not, in fact, alive, had not, in fact, ever been born- would we be in Iraq? Who knows? Probably not- since it wasn't very logical. But saying that isn't to wish them unborn, or dead. It's to speculate on what might have been, and to lament they got to where they are- well, actually the lament is just inferential, that isn't even there. IMO, of course. But of course most people are very emotional, and make emotional inferences where I do not, so perhaps people who count on being in the public eye of the emotional and illogical ought to know better. I've no idea about that.
