Violent Crime in Cities Shows Sharp Surge

nytimes.com

I don't want to sway the board off topic, but I really thought this article was interesting. It validates a theme within the pessimists social thoughts - which I happen to agree with. Though demographic patterns do play a role, I think one of the biggest determinants of crime in a country like ours is economic conditions. Clearly economic conditions for the have-nots have deteriorated...the escalating cost of living, underemployment, coupled with an inhumane health care system probably plays a huge role in this. The recent surge in crime is really quite a tragedy and I don't expect it to reverse anytime soon as the economy muddles through its problems.
