Yep. This sounds like those Washington State Liberals. Don't hurt anybody's "feelers."

A Ban on Booing in High Schools?!

In an unprecedented move, the Washington State Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) is considering a ban on booing, negative comments, and offensive chants from all state high school sporting events.

According to Mike Colbrese, executive director of the WIAA:

"It's the organized effort to try to intimidate or try to make fun of someone that becomes personal in nature that can escalate then into other concerns that we might have."

Howard Wasserman of the Sports Law Blog see this as clear violation of the First Amendment. Wasserman asserts that allowing fans to cheer for player "X" but not boo player "Y" is a discriminatory act.

A rule like this will get out of hand quickly. A "boo the referee" chant will turn into students or parents being thrown out of high school gyms. Students waving signs at a shooter on the free throw line will be removed from the game, or worse, face school administrative punishment. If one team travels to play another team with a vocal fan base and the coach wants to remove the home field or home gym advantage, what better way to accomplish this than complaining about -------- booing. Tell the refs your players' feeling are hurt by the boos or chants of the crowd and have a good portion of the spectators removed.

What a way to try to get a "W."
