Back in 1972 we were involved in a "police action", but no war. And that was about 10x worse than Iraq, but still no war. What's going on now is just another unimportant 3rd world police action that will be completely forgotten in a hundred years. We do these things all the time. Now for the Iraqis, what is going on is close to a "war" in that it has torn apart their country, but for us, it is nothing.

I'm sure it's difficult to get the American public excited about a police action ... a war is more important. Which is why we've had a War on Poverty; a War on Crime; a War and Drugs; and now a War on Terrorism. Not many have noticed that terrorism is just a particular way of waging violence that's gone on for thousands of years. A War on Terrorism makes as much sense as having a War on Flanking Maneuvers.
