I once defended a manufacturer of ethanol in a lawsuit by a fellow who used ethanol to set barbecue coals on fire in a Hibachi grill. He was using ethanol because had no proper lighting fluid available.

He was under the impression that the fire he had originally set was extinguished so he squirted ethanol directly from the can onto the coals. The predictable happened - a flashback and the resulting explosion of the can from which he was squirting. He was horribly burned, incurring more than $1 million in medical costs.

It was my first foray into patent law as I determined that someone had in the 1890s patented a screen device which, when placed at the outlet of the flammable liquid, prevents explosions caused by flashbacks.

If you look at lighter fluids containers, they have a small plastic cross at the outlet which I assume serves the same purpose. Some have real screens.

The plaintiff claimed that the flame which set off the explosion was invisible. His injuries were made worse by the fact that he could not determine what part of his body was on fire.
