OTOH its fairly secular. It has a lot of people that are nominally Catholics, and also has Protestants, Muslims and others, but it isn't a particularly religious country.

In fact, France is considered a Latin country which tend to be more religious than N. European countries. It is mostly Catholic with some Muslims and very few Protestants. Religion has played an extremely important role throughout France's history. In fact, even now, only 4% of the population says they are not affiliated to a religion.....that compares to 10% in the US. Even Germany is fairly religious........especially Bavaria with its sizeable Catholic population. Sweden and Denmark more fit the image you are trying to project, not France.
