What happened then was under different conditions than now. Of course, it wasn't Man-made. If you think about it, if all the other natural variations affect that sort of change, imagine what impact Man's activity would have? Very few are asserting that the climate changes happening now are purely from natural variations (e.g.s solar cycles, volcanic activity etc..) The vast majority of the science community is stating that with no uncertainty, the current global warming IS man-made.
