The defense INDUSTRY is different than US spending on defense. Our companies (and other countries companies) sell a lot of stuff.

To the extent they sell non defense "stuff", that's not really an issue with the defense industry. To the extent they sell weapons and support systems to the military that comes from US defense spending.

A third category would be foreign weapons sales. They have grown over time. Maybe they have even grown faster than the American economy, but its extremely unlikely that the growth has been so fast as to make the defense industry as a whole a larger part of the American economy. Weapons sales from American companies to foreign countries, are considerably smaller than the sales to the US military and the US military has greatly declined as a percentage of our economy, so the growth of American weapon sales to foreign countries isn't enough to make the defense industry a bigger part of our economy.
