Notice that while the 2005 rates were higher than 2004 for "Murder and non-negligent manslaughter" they are lower than every year from 1986 to 1998. And the general violent crime rate in 2005 was lower than every year since 1986 except 2004.

The fact that we had an increase in 2005 has more to do with the fact that crime in 2004 was so low. Violent crime in 2005 was not high, it is the 2nd lowest year on the chart.
