Nasdaq now allowing 1, 2 and 3 character symbols

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The Nasdaq said Monday its trading system now accepts stock symbols of less than four characters in its bid to compete with the New York Stock Exchange retained its DFC symbol in announcing its move Monday to the Nasdaq from the American Stock Exchange. The Nasdaq said the change provides issuers and their investors with freedom of choice and it ensures a smooth transition for companies moving to the exchange. "It is akin to the portability of cell phone numbers," the Nasdaq said. "This new capability enables Nasdaq to provide full-backup capabilities for NYSE and AMEX listed stocks.
