What about them? What would change? They need our protection now and they would then. They would feel free to carp and us and undermine our policies then as they do now - more free, having had such a cost-free sucess.

You are operating under the illusion that the Muslim countries don't like us because of Israel and would like us if we dumped Israel. No such luck. They don't like us because we are powerful and they blame the West for their troubles. We're it at the moment. That would not change. In fact it might well intensify, as the Arab autocrats would have to find another reason in a hurry as to why they can't offer either reform or working economies to their population. Israel has served as the great excuse for many years.
