The French haven't been an ally in the real sense to America since the revolution.

Well we were both fighting the British at the same time during the war of 1812. And we were more directly allies in WWI. You could make an argument for WWII, but the French resistance doesn't precisely equal France. So maybe "since WWI". Still you have a point, that's a long time.

Edit - Well they did send forces to Lebanon with us and to "The Gulf War".
