re: OTOH if there is nothing wrong with having such a margin why bother with the whole serious of replies you made to a post on that subject. If its ok for XOM to have 11.8% profit margin, or the industry to have 10% profit margin, why even bother with the Kroger comparison?

Wrong depends on perspective. 18% operating margin is pretty extraordinary for a commodity company. They could manage their profits at a lower level and avoid a lot of ill will from the marketplace and the regulators. They get a lot of federal subsidies because they are a very necessary part of our economy.

So if I were an investor in the company, I would think they had done something wrong with regard to managing their business, which will come back to bite them longer term. From a consumer perspective I figure they have the prerogative to do what ever they want, and I can say "F you and your greed you will get your payback" (which I think they will with alternative energy and regulation).

The Congress is already working on repeal of their subsidies and funding their competitors. You tell me, did they do something wrong wrt managing their business?
