Update, fun with HDTV...
Well, I took my digital set top boxes back to Comcast-- the little one, and the high def box. That means we wont be getting TV5monde, but the savings will in less than six months pay for a HDTV tuner I bought.
However, I think it is not a trivial exercise to set up a hdtv tuner (our hd monitor does not have a tv tuner). Regular broadcast quality is fine, I can tune that in with a VCR. But for HD I have installed an HDTV tuner into my personal computer (our large screen TV is the monitor for the PC).
I'd hoped my new tuner would pull in the HDTV PBS channel over the cable, but so far no luck. Comcast might be scrambling it? It is an ATSC tuner and should have found KCTS-HD. There is not a good manual with my Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1600 TV tuner, so could be user error. fwiw, this is interesting-- en.wikipedia.org 256 QAM is a cable standard, not an ATSC standard; however, over time it is expected to be included in the ATSC standard
Still, I am pretty sure my Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1600 tuner should have pulled it in. fwiw, this Hauppauge tuner can be found for as little as $60, although I paid $80.
The next thing for me to do, is just try to pull in KCTS-HD off my antenna. Up to the roof for some rerouting of cable! |
