I just attended an IBM seminar on Y2K in London (the marketing opportunities it represents for a company like IBM).

The gist of it, as I understood it:

1. The problem is real, and companies underestimate the time and money
they will need to reserve to solve it.

2. It can be solved, but will represent a drain on resources and will
lead to a freeze in other kinds of IT investments.

3. Many will decide to upgrade hardware, operating systems and servers
(middle ware)and software instead of trying to fix existing
configurations.

4. Time and inertia are the main enemies.

5. It is unlikely the sky will fall down on Jan.1 2000, and if there are major interruptions of mission critical services, it will be due to lack of planning and foresight (i.e as of this moment still avoidable).

I was left with one question noone was able to answer: if two digit year codes have not caused problems for all of those born in the 1800's (my grandmother was born in 1898 and passed away only recently but she never received negative annuities, or had any other problem), why is the year 2000 problem different? In both cases the problem is that the computer comes up with negative numbers, and in both cases the solution is simply to introduce code that will add 100 whenever a negative number is ecountered in a normally positive date or year related field.

Go TPII!!

Regards,

Patrick
