The less confident the West is, culturally and otherwise, the less influence moderate Muslims have.

I think the correlation is between militant Islam (~10% or 100,000,000 Muslims)
and the so called moderate Muslims. So, the more successful the militants are the less we hear from the moderates. They are intimidated to a larger degree than the West. As we have seen in Iraq, Kenya and Jordan Muslim suicide bombers blow up mostly other Muslims.
