I am not familiar with scientific work of Michael Crichton, but I am glad that the philosopher got the idea right. Actually, I would say more, that even if some climate model would happen to have correct parametrizations, accurate prediction of climate details (fluctuations and "anomalies" from quasi-periodic general behavior) is still entirely impossible, given the current state of knowledge about chaotic dynamical systems. All this "global" coolings and "warmings" are just those little details we are bitching about. This is a mathematically proven property of the system, so it will stand true until the collapse of Sun.
