Mar 18, 2007 – Deposits of copper and iron ore have been discovered in Mporokoso district in Zambia's Northern Province, local newspaper Times of Zambia reported Sunday.

The paper cited district commissioner Lameck Mugala as saying the discovery was made after some samples from the area were tested.

Mugala said results of sample testing indicated that iron ore content was at 82 percent with more than 13 percent being copper.

He said this was an important revelation for the district as well as for the region as it would boost economic activity once exploited.

"As a district, we are requesting people that can prospect and see how they can start mining," Mugala said.

He said if proper procedures were followed on license application, all interested people were free to visit the district and look at the opportunities there.

Zambia's copper deposits are mainly centered with Copperbelt Province while some new mines have been found in Northwestern Province in recent years, boosting the country's prospect for more copper within unchecked region.
