We are not talking about religion here. Neither were the Nazis, an ethic (or in their terms, genetic) Jew was to eliminated, even if they had converted to Christianity. It started saying he was trading in the black market and the say he was hiding. Hiding from the Nazi's if you bother to read other citations from this book, was to pretend that he was not a Jew. There is no inconsistency, sometimes the best hiding place is right in front of your enemy. And really... I mean at 14... a shadowy character .... one who is trying not to be killed because of what you were when you were born...?
