Sycamore Simplifies Network Migration with Unique Performance Enhancements to Its Multiservice Switching Platforms
Tuesday March 20, 7:30 am ET
Circuit/Packet eXchange (CPX) Solution Empowers Cost-Effective Transition from TDM to IP While Maintaining Carrier-Class Reliability

CHELMSFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sycamore Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMR - News), a leader in intelligent networking solutions for fixed line and mobile network operators worldwide, today announced availability of the Circuit/Packet eXchange (CPX) module set for its DNX-11/88 multiservice cross-connect platforms. The CPX solution delivers unique performance enhancements that enable cost-effective migration from TDM to IP in transmission networks while ensuring mission-critical reliability for end-user services and critical SS7 signaling traffic.

Sycamore's CPX module set integrates circuit and packet processing functionality in a highly compact, multiservice cross-connect system, allowing network operators an efficient and cost-effective means to migrate circuit-based traffic to packet-switched networks while retaining the robust monitoring and control capabilities that operators rely on to ensure the highest degree of network availability and carrier-class performance.

Proven in carrier-class networks around the world, the DNX-11/88 multiservice cross-connect platforms combine service interface density with intelligent bandwidth management capabilities, enabling network operators to meet a broad range of aggregation and grooming applications while reducing network cost and complexity. With the addition of the CPX module set, Sycamore's multiservice switching solutions now offer a broader range of customer benefits, including:

Reliable, Non-Disruptive SS7 to IP/Sigtran Migration

Broadly deployed around the world, SS7 signaling networks form the cornerstone of reliability in wireline and wireless transmission networks. The explosive growth of broadband services, including mobile data and VoIP, is causing an exponential increase in SS7 signaling traffic. To enhance scalability as network connections migrate from TDM to IP, many operators are considering the transition to Signaling Transport (Sigtran), a suite of IETF protocols designed to address bandwidth constraints of traditional signaling networks by migrating signaling connections from dedicated circuit-switched TDM to packetized IP transport.

The integrated packet functionality and optimized link bundle management capabilities of the CPX module set allow operators to seamlessly migrate signaling links to Sigtran while retaining the critical diagnostic and test access features - not inherent in IP transport - that ensure high-availability services. By combining the operational efficiencies of IP/Ethernet, proven DCS reliability and IP/Ethernet test access features in a single platform, the CPX/DNX solution also reduces the CapEx and OpEx costs associated with overlay router-based signaling network solutions.

Cost-Effective Traffic Consolidation on a Single Platform

With the CPX module set, network operators can consolidate traditional circuit-based services, IP/Ethernet traffic, and critical management data across shared transmission facilities using a single platform designed for pay-as-you-grow scalability. As a result, network operators can reduce CapEx and OpEx, simplify network management, and increase configuration flexibility. Fully interoperable with Ethernet/PPP-compliant routers and SS7 signaling network elements, the CPX solution also features innovative IP/Ethernet test access capabilities that bring circuit-based, carrier-grade diagnostics of the DNX platform to packet-switched networks.

Efficient DCN Aggregation

Data Control Network (DCN) communication channels from remote sites can increase operational costs by consuming significant bandwidth and port capacity on core IP routers. The DNX/CPX solution efficiently aggregates DCN channels and encapsulates them into 10/100Base-T Ethernet for handoff to the IP network, reducing port costs and preserving capacity on expensive router platforms. In mobile networks, the CPX efficiently consolidates DCN traffic from individual base stations onto a shared IP transport and combines multiple base stations for backhaul to the switching center.

"The CPX solution was specifically designed to enable pragmatic and cost-effective network migration," said John Curtis, product manager for Sycamore's DNX multiservice switching platforms. "With a unique IP forwarding engine and a robust set of test access and interoperability features, the CPX offers compelling benefits to fixed line and mobile operators as their transport networks scale to meet the demands of increased data traffic."

Sycamore Demonstrates CPX Solution at CTIA Wireless Exhibition

Sycamore will showcase the CPX capabilities in a live product demonstration at its booth (#4755) at the CTIA Wireless 2007 exhibition, the world's largest technology event dedicated exclusively to wireless, broadband convergence and mobile computing technologies. CTIA Wireless 2007 will be held at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida, from March 27-29, 2007.
