"What happens to a civil war if only one side shows up to fight it?" Why... I guess that the side that temporarily lays low in the grass for a while (the Shiite militias, and their Iranian backers...) WINS! That is, as long as they can keep 'Uncle Sucker' busy attacking and degrading the military potential of their enemies (the Sunnis and their own volunteer jihadist shock troops) FOR THEM. Eventually, of course, that leaves all the marbles for the Shiites to pick up --- (very smart tactics).
