The two matters are completely different. When a new administration takes office it's fairly typical to clear out the AGs. George Bush let go 91 out of 93 when he took office in 2001.

The Bush firing of eight of his own AG appointees is highly unusual. One of those AGs prosecuted Republican Duke Cunningham for corruption, so there is an appearance of vendetta.

This whole episode is the political equivalent of turning over your major ammunition depot to the enemy in wartime. The Bushies seem either totally hamfisted or politically suicidal.
