Based purely on gut, people's assessment of nuclear reactor safety tends to go south after watching firsthand a half-dozen of their favorite landmarks and skyscrapers burn and eventually crumble to the ground. No matter how assured one feels about the "intrinsic safety" of nuclear reactors, exogenous threats have now made it a more difficult call, if not a more personal and subjective one, to boot.

"If you lose cooling in such a reactor," said Remick, "those little pellets will absorb heat without failing and releasing radioactivity."

That's all very well and good for live, operating plants. But, what new improvements in waste management techniques has the industry concocted in order to deal with the eternal-like problems associated with the disposal of spent fuels? I'm a ready and willing learner in this regard. What say you?
